Fascinating journey of Nataliia Tymkiv: from Ukrainian roots to Wikimedia leadership

When it comes to advocating for transparency, governance, and global collaboration within the Wikimedia movement, few names resonate as powerfully as Nataliia Tymkiv. With a career marked by dedication, leadership, and a relentless commitment to community-driven projects, Tymkiv has become an influential figure not just within Wikimedia but in the broader nonprofit and human rights sectors.

Born and raised in Ivano-Frankivsk, Western Ukraine, Nataliia Tymkiv’s journey to becoming a key figure in Wikimedia’s global landscape began with humble roots. She pursued higher education with an unwavering passion for administration and records management, earning a Master’s degree in Public Administration and a Specialist degree in Records Management and Information Activities.

Before stepping into the world of nonprofit governance, Tymkiv built her expertise in finance and management by working in commercial enterprises, holding roles ranging from head of the personnel department to executive director. Her early professional experiences laid the foundation for her adeptness at navigating the complex financial landscapes of nonprofit organizations.

Tymkiv’s journey with Wikimedia began in 2011 when she registered as a contributor. Despite initial hesitation about the permanence of online contributions, her passion for literature and history ultimately led her to create an article about Leonid Terekhovych, a poet whose work deeply moved her. This pivotal moment marked the beginning of her dedicated involvement in the Wikimedia community.

By 2012, Nataliia Tymkiv had not only become an administrator on Ukrainian Wikipedia but also joined the Board of Wikimedia Ukraine as Treasurer. In this role, she took on the monumental task of building the chapter’s financial model from the ground up, fostering transparency and accountability through meticulous reporting and efficient grant management.

Over the years, Tymkiv’s commitment to Wikimedia’s mission saw her take on increasingly significant roles. As the volunteer Executive Director of Wikimedia Ukraine in 2013, she guided the chapter through a period of strategic growth, implementing best practices in governance and significantly increasing the organization’s impact.

In 2016, Nataliia’s journey reached new heights as she was appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation, where her strategic vision and financial acumen continued to benefit the global Wikimedia community. Her ability to merge local community needs with global strategies earned her the position of Deputy Chairperson of the Board in 2019, and subsequently, Chair of the Board of Trustees in 2021.

Parallel to her Wikimedia achievements, Tymkiv has been at the forefront of advocating for media freedom and human rights in Ukraine. As Financial Director of the Centre for Democracy and Rule of Law (CEDEM), Tymkiv oversees financial operations while also playing a pivotal role in upholding democratic values through legal advocacy and policy initiatives.

Nataliia Tymkiv’s influence extends far beyond her professional titles. As a community leader, she has fostered collaborations between Wikimedia chapters, particularly through the Wikimedia Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) group. Known for her strategic thinking and inclusive leadership style, Tymkiv has been pivotal in strengthening the relationship between Wikimedia affiliates and the Wikimedia Foundation.

As she continues to shape the future of Wikimedia and advocate for democratic values, Nataliia Tymkiv remains an inspiring force. Her story is a testament to the power of dedication, community engagement, and the belief that knowledge should be freely accessible to all.

At this year’s Perspektywy Women in Tech Summit, Nataliia Tymkiv will share her insights on leadership, community building, and the role of Wikimedia in shaping global information accessibility. Don’t miss the opportunity to learn from one of the most dynamic voices in the Wikimedia movement.
